What’s your favorite time of day?

My favourite time of day is early morning. Rare exceptions aside, I’ll always take the quiet of first light over the buzz of late evening. Even if I’m fired up at night, I prefer to get to bed, trusting that the dream muses will do their work and deliver something to me when I wake.

In summer that can mean rising as early as 4:30am, with the light. As the months turn, that naturally drifts later, but even in the depths of winter I rarely sleep past six.

And what do I do in those hours?

I write and reflect. Sometimes I’m catching the tail of a vivid dream, working it through in a Jungian way. Other mornings, my focus is squarely on swimming: posting attendance stats, reviewing splits, shaping session plans for the squads I coach.

Creative practice also has its place — scamping storyboards, curating photos from the last thirty years, playing with ideas in Adobe Express or GeniGPT.

These mornings are less about finishing things and more about orienting myself: sketching, shaping, setting the compass for the day ahead. The house is quiet, the world is just waking, and I can listen to myself think.
