The Watersprites – Chapter 13 Dr. Therese Varn knows alien humanoids have been on earth for at least two decades.

Varn Watches

In a Stockholm café, Dr. Therese Varn adjusted her headphones.

The Bruges video played on a cracked tablet.

She zoomed in. Pixelated. Then paused.

Freya’s eyes. Vertical pupils. Crown-like ripple in the browline.

“They’ve reached the surface,” she said softly.

Then added:

“And they’re not alone.”

A Whisper at the Lake

The van pulled into a wooded clearing beside a lake in Lower Saxony. Glass-flat. Mist-veiled. Cold.

They climbed out quietly.

Freya walked to the edge. Dipped her fingers in.

The water trembled.

Jay came beside her.

“You don’t have to keep running,” he said.

Freya turned. Her eyes glowed faintly in the dusk.

“You should come with us,” she said.
“Be one of us.”

Jay looked away. His hands were shaking.

Behind them, Hersch  skipped a flat stone across the lake. Five skips. Then stillness.

At Dover, a boarding pass jammed in the printer.

“Paper feed error,” muttered the clerk.

DS Alan Mordant stood at the front of the queue, frowning.

Behind him, Lydia Quain shifted impatiently.

He turned to her.

“Wrong ferry,” he said.

And smiled.
