Five-Year Diary: Up early because the sun was already pouring through the window. No point lying there once the dorm starts waking up, so I got up and filled in the competition in the Daily Mail. It seemed as good a way as any to start the day — though I doubt I’ll win anything.

A young boy in a brown shirt is climbing a rocky hillside by a stream, looking focused as he grasps at the grass.

German: Very, very dull. The sort of lesson where time moves at half speed and everyone just waits for the bell. I can’t remember anything particularly happening, which probably says everything about it.

French: We had a test after some sort of sidetrack in the lesson — I’m not even sure what the detour was about — and I did badly: 10 out of 20. Have to redo it. Annoying, because I usually do better than that.

Geography: We were working on time zones, though the room was so noisy it was hard to concentrate. Lots of talking, scraping chairs, boys messing about instead of doing the work.

Break.

New French book. These are purchased second hand from a shop of sorts run by a couple of master’s wives. (There were no female teachers).

French again later, working from the book properly this time.

Maths. Worked through the exercises and got 35 out of 35 going back over them. That always feels satisfying — clean and definite, unlike essays or languages where someone decides whether it’s right or wrong.

Physics. Wrote up the experiment from prep — though I wish I’d written down what the experiment actually was. At some point I was still filling in the Daily Mail competition.

Latin. Had to redo the earlier work.

Lunch. I sit at the end of the table which usually changes the tone of things a bit. Anything for a change. No one kicked me out as usually there would be a prefect at the end of the table.

Games. Most people were doing the Ten Mile run. Muddy slide and Danny Bridge. Friends were coming in at around 1 hour 36 or 1 hour 37, which seems fairly quick considering the mud and our age and being new to cross country running.

Eat afterwards.

Grubber — the school tuck shop off the library car park.

Watched water polo versus Lupton. Very rough game. Lots of fouling.

Evening prep: German reading.

Then looked for my games stuff
