Five-Year Diary: Monday, 15th March 1976

Chemistry: We did an experiment with sulphuric acid and copper oxide. The copper oxide is a black powder and when you warm it in the acid it turns the liquid blue. After a while you’re supposed to get blue crystals of copper sulphate if you leave it. Smith had just come back from home. His shoulder was in bandages. He couldn’t write anything down. This meant the other boy on his bench had to do the whole write-up.

English: We’re doing A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Prep: on letter writing and the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Letter writing is clearly thought of a vital life skill.

Physics: I did Smith’s work on the pinhole camera as he could only watch.

Break.

Chemistry: The crystals had started to form. They were good actually — proper bright blue ones.

Latin. Prep and nouns.

Maths. Lower school test. I did badly because I rushed it.

Lunch.

Afternoon Games: We had interval running. We met up with Sedgwick and we went down to the Ten Mile start. We ran part of the course — the three mile stretch out towards the Cross Keys.

English: I read the part of Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

B after that, working on plays.

Divinity. Just reading chapters.

Prep in the evening. I didn’t have my maths book.

House prayers before bed. My brother did the reading.
