A young man running on a path in a landscape with a waterfall in the background, while a sheep runs alongside him.

Five-Year Diary: Thursday, 18th March 1976

The day was too dull for anything more than some end-of-day jottings.

English: Test on spelling words and the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

French: Countries: Angleterre, Etats Unis, Deutschland. Whatever.

Maths: Topology.

German: test 14/20, or as I’d prefer 19/39 or 19/45.

Latin: set prep. No teacher, just a book.

I send a card to Mum for Mother’s Day.

Games: go up Winder and look for the waterfall. I love disappearing into ravines and following the source of brooks to hillside springs, or a water trough. Water-ever.

Project Centre: Shape wood for my salt and pepper pots. I’m Rubbish.

Evening Ents: Change into Sunday clothes to go and see ‘The Boyfriend’ in Powell Hall. Our housemaster and his daughter were in it. At Oxford I auditioned for The Boyfriend. The director, Derick Wax, offered me the role. Instead, I played Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. Did I get that choice wrong?

A cup of coffee and biscuits for 10p. What a rip off!
