A group of boys in a gymnasium watching one boy happily climbing a rope, while others stand on gym mats looking up.

Five-year Diary. Friday, 19th March 1976

Chapel: new organ. The head of music had been banging on about it for ages. Yes, uplifting to praise God, but haven’t we got better things to do?

Divinity: on the religious plays of Dorothy L. Sayers. We heard about the plays she wrote for Canterbury Festival. One notable play is The Zeal of Thy House. This play is about the rebuilding of Canterbury Cathedral after the medieval fire. It was all serious stuff about pride, work, and religion.

PE: We played pirates — a chasing game around the ropes and apparatus. Once you were caught, you joined the pirates. The game was a simple tag. Alternatively, you had to wrestle the boy and touch his back. Another choice was to push him into a dead zone. This resulted in half the class hunting the last few boys around the gym until the whistle blew. Good fun.

I got into a bate with a supposed friend over calling me a nickname I detest: booties. I wore zip-up ankle boots instead of lace-up school shoes. This was because my left foot was a size smaller than my right.

Geography: look at the Geographical magazine about copper in Zambia. Set two preps.

Latin: A.T.T.I.B. was late.

Unison practice.

Prep: Physics: light; Geography; Zambia; Maths: topology and nodes.
