Five-Year Diary: Missed Divinity for a music lesson. I talk with Branston over in the music school about his girlfriend, Tamara.

I decided to keep up the flute even though I’m wearing an orthodontic brace. Playing requires me to press my lower lip against the mouthpiece, which drives it against the sharp edges of the orthodontic brace. It hurt, but not enough to stop.

Lesson on scales. I was OK but not good—competent at sight-reading, able to get through straightforward classical pieces—but in my head I was elsewhere, imagining myself playing like Ian Anderson, of Jethro Tull – rock flute, one-legged, theatrical.

Double P.E.

Run back to get cricket stuff. Practice in the gym on foam rubber and bowling. An utter waste of my time. I should be swimming.

Break.

Tech project—say, I might add photos if finished.

Lunch.

Physics—given imposition for all the noise we are making.

Geog—map work.

Maths.
