(Sofitel Hotel, Val d’Isere, age 19)

Five-Year Diary: I’m worried that Marc, the senior chamber boy, would be furious with me over the sizable tips I’d received from some recent wealthy guests – I’d been the one who had carried their bags and dug their Rolls out of the snow. They’d not been so generous with him.

I did a tedious five-hour shift on reception.

Tools of my trade

Hating the hassle. Reading a sports mag.

I ended up buying a 1200 FR leather jacket from the fancy clothes shop next door. I  still have a fair bit saved for home. I should have pushed for an end-of-season discount – a seasonier discount.

I get a call from Dad’s P.A., Mrs Hare, for ‘the hall porter’ (me) to say for me to meet Dad in London on Tuesday, then we’d drive up to Appleby on Wednesday, and then eventually I’d make my way home to Newcastle.

Having got my skis back from being waxed, I ski the Bellevarde, then over to Tignes and the glacier. Spring skiing at its best.
