Saturday 4 July, throughout Lewes
Lewes is set to come alive on 4 July with a bold and colourful Festival of Democracy through its historic streets. Taking place in the 250th anniversary year of the US Declaration of Independence, the festival will celebrate Lewes’ connection to Thomas Paine, whose ideas helped shape democratic movements around the world.
Working in partnership, Lewes Climate Hub, Thomas Paine: Legacy, and Lewes Town Council will kick off a year-long Festival of Democracy with a parade through Lewes High Street featuring banners, musicians and costumes.
Dressing up around the theme of democracy is encouraged, with costumes including Greeks/Romans, the Battle of Lewes, Suffragettes and Civil Rights campaigners.
