In early July 1976 I was awarded the school Geography Prize. The prize itself was pleasing enough, but what really mattered was the book token that came with it. Before long I had turned it into six books. Five were science-fiction novels by the likes of Isaac Asimov and other familiar names from the shelves I haunted. The sixth was different. It was Arthur C. Clarke’s Profiles of the Future.

At fourteen, I approached it with the confidence only a teenager can possess. The future seemed not merely knowable but inevitable. Clarke’s charts and predictions were less speculation than a timetable. Somewhere ahead lay lunar settlements, intelligent machines, weather control, first contact and perhaps immortality itself. It was all laid out decade by decade as though humanity had already booked the tickets.

Fifty years later, in July 2026, I find myself reading the same book again.

The first thing I recognise is not an argument or a prediction but the timeline at the back. Instantly I am back in my bedroom in Gosforth, surrounded by science-fiction paperbacks, imagining myself living through the twenty-first century. In 1976, the year 2026 felt unimaginably distant. Yet here I am, finally able to compare Clarke’s future with the world that actually arrived.

What strikes me is how often he was right about the direction of travel while being wrong about the route and the timetable.

Pocket calculators, for example, appear on his chart. They seemed remarkable enough in 1976. Today they are buried inside devices billions of people carry in their pockets. His “Universal Radiophone” sounds quaint until one realises that it is effectively a smartphone. Artificial Intelligence appears around 2020, a prediction that now looks astonishingly close. Gene splicing, organ transplants, planetary probes and countless other advances have become part of everyday reality.

Other predictions have simply failed to arrive. Fusion power remains perpetually thirty years away. Lunar settlements have not appeared. Brain transplants remain science fiction. Space elevators exist mainly in engineering papers and novels.

Yet the prediction that fascinates me most is one that Clarke placed near the end of the twenty-first century:

“Machine Intelligence Exceeds Man’s.”

The phrasing itself dates the book. Today I would naturally read it as “Machine Intelligence Exceeds Humankind’s.” Yet the prediction remains provocative. Clarke placed it around 2090. Reading it in 1976, that date felt safely remote. Reading it in 2026, it feels surprisingly close.

In some respects we may already have crossed the threshold. No human can search and synthesise millions of documents in seconds. No human can instantly translate dozens of languages or recall vast quantities of information on demand. Machines already surpass us in certain intellectual tasks.

But I doubt Clarke would have considered today’s systems the fulfilment of his prophecy.

This is, after all, the author who imagined HAL 9000. His benchmark was not merely a machine that could answer questions or write prose. He imagined something that reasoned, planned, understood, perhaps even possessed a form of consciousness. Whether we are approaching that point or merely creating ever more sophisticated imitations remains one of the defining questions of our age.

Then there is the prediction whose absence is perhaps more revealing than any that appear.

Climate change is nowhere to be found.

Instead, Clarke speaks of Weather Control, Climate Control and Planetary Engineering. Like many futurists of his generation, he assumed humanity’s growing power over nature would be deliberate. We would first understand the Earth, then improve it. The possibility that industrial civilisation might destabilise the climate before achieving mastery scarcely enters the picture.

The science was already there. Atmospheric carbon dioxide was being measured. The greenhouse effect was understood. Yet climate change had not entered public consciousness in the way it dominates discussions today.

Looking back, that omission tells us as much about the 1960s and 1970s as the predictions themselves.

Clarke imagined a future in which humanity gained increasing control over the world. What he did not fully anticipate was that humanity would become a geological force long before it learned how to control the consequences of its actions.

Perhaps that is the greatest lesson from rereading Profiles of the Future fifty years later. The future is not simply a matter of technological possibility. Technology advances. Human choices, economics, politics and unintended consequences shape what actually happens.

The fourteen-year-old who bought this book with his Geography Prize expected space colonies and lunar settlements. The sixty-four-year-old rereading it finds himself far more interested in artificial intelligence, climate change and the strange fact that billions of people now carry devices more powerful than any computer Clarke could have imagined when he first drew up his timetable of tomorrow.

The future arrived. Just not in the order anyone expected.
