Appleby Castle, Age 14 years 10 months

I expected Dad home in the evening, but he never appeared.

I slept until ten, then had a long soak in Dad’s round bath before swimming in the courtyard pool. For breakfast I had the artichoke Dad hadn’t eaten the night before. It had come from the Castle kitchen garden and tasted wonderful. Even now, there was something satisfying about eating food that had been grown only a few hundred yards away. The taste had a depth and immediacy about it.

I watched Waterworld, had lunch in the refectory prepared by Mabel, and spent much of the day following the Montreal Olympics.

At 5:40 pm I went to the doctor and was given cream for insect bites.

Dad finally returned at supper time.

Then it was back to the Olympics. Because everything was happening in Montreal, the broadcasts ran late, and so did I. I stayed up watching and ended up going to bed much later than usual
