What’s the kindest thing someone has ever done for you?

Be kind to yourself: life’s OK. It’s better than the alternative

A kindness shown to me makes me tear up. The slightest thing. Even being kind to myself can make my lower lip quiver.

Perhaps there’s something in being British, born in the early 1960s, brought up with the middle-class idea of the stiff upper lip, then sent to a boys’ boarding school from the age of eight. People were not supposed to be kind. Or at least kindness wasn’t something you expected, asked for, or dared made a fuss about.

My first thought when I read this prompt was: how kind of my wife to marry me! But that rather diminishes both our lasting love for each other and the glory of getting married. She married me for love not as an act of charity.

So perhaps the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me was something I did for myself only a few months ago.

I told myself: You’re doing OK. Be happy. Take it easy. Count your blessings. Be kind. Little things count. Be gentle on yourself.

  1. Which school did you go too?

    1. Mowden Hall, Northumberland and then Sedbergh School, Cumbria. Were you sent away to school?

      1. No I wasn’t, i was interested to know where you went. Was it a good experience for you?

        1. Reading your blog I’ve answered my own question :) ‘good’ – maybe at the time mostly ‘yes’, but in retrospect an absolute no. Kids need a loving family and friends around them growing up don’t you think?

          1. That’s deep, of course kids need a loving family growing up, sad to hear you say this, did you feel rejected being sent there? Though a good education is also key for a stable future and income.

“Kindness was not something you expected, asked for, or dared make a fuss about” explains a great deal in one sentence. And you caught something important in stopping yourself from framing your wife marrying you as charity. Thank you for writing this one plainly rather than tidying it up.
