How do you write what people actually want to read?

For a start, I’d take out the filler word actually.

Then, unless I’m writing for a particular audience, I write for myself.

If I’m interested, curious, amused, angry, puzzled or moved by it, there is at least a chance somebody else will be too.

Perhaps that is the trick. Know your reader when you have one. When you don’t, write to the most demanding reader you know: yourself.

I should cut the dull bits, but don’t. It amuses me to read in my teenage diary when I write when I woke up, or had a bath.

When I’m ’in the flow,’ I write as I wrote letters: a heart to heart to one person.

One response to “How do you write what people want to read?”

  1. This struck a chord with me. It is so easy to spend our days rushing and planning, completely forgetting to live in the minutes we actually have. Good read.
