Saturday 7th and Saturday 14th September
START: 2.00 pm Mountfield Road Car Park, Lewes FC
END: 4.00 pm Wiley’s Bridge (possibly return via Southover Grange and Western Road)
Meet under the willow at Mountfield Road Car Park, Lewes FC, close to Lewes Railway Station.
Route: We will then head down to Convent Field, come back via Mountfield Road to the Railway Land Wildlife Trust, behind Lewes Library to Style’s Field and then onwards to Trinity St.John sub-Castro, to The Pells Rec and Lido, and Wiley’s Bridge.
We’ll have a chance to consider the value of veteran trees and the Woodland Trust categories of ‘notable’ and ‘veteran’ while looking at White Willow, Crack Willow, Hybrid Black Poplar, London Plane, Holm Oak, Mulberry, Sycamore, Holly, Hornbeam and Wild black Poplar trees … and others that catch our eye such as Ash, Oak and Beech. We may spot trees that are not yet on the Ancient Tree Inventory and want to add them. Bring a tape measure or use mine to mature the girth of trees.
This walk starts on wet grass and continues on urban pavements, soil paths, Twittens, and the usual hills of Lewes. You should wear trainers or walking boots at least.
Saturday 7th SOLD OUT
Saturday 14th Some Tickets Available > https://bit.ly/LewesVeteranTrees
Sunday 8th and Sunday 15th September
Top of Offham Farm Road onto the Pellbrook Cut byway to Offham with a diversion along Chalkpit Cut.

START: 11.00 am Bench at the top of Landport Farm Road, Lewes
END: 1.00 pm Offham Church, but will return via Pellbrook Cut
We’ll have a chance to consider the value of veteran trees and the Woodland Trust categories of ‘notable’ and ‘veteran’ while looking at Ash (maiden, multistem, pollarded, some dead, some fallen with accompanying fungi), Sycamore, Field Maple, Black Poplar, Beech, Alder, and Crack Willow. I’ve identified a handful that the Woodland Trust has yet to verify. Find them all on the Ancient Tree Inventory. We may spot trees that are not yet on the Ancient Tree Inventory and want to add them. Bring a tape measure or use mine to measure the girth of trees. The only facilities will be the Blacksmiths Arms on Offham Road at the end of the walk.
For health and safety reasons, I will likely stick to the footpath rather than venturing onto the steep woodland banks, where there are a few additional veteran trees I can point out. Sturdy walking boots are recommended, and parts of the path will be muddy. If you want to look at the trees close up, you should have long trousers and sleeves due to brambles and nettles. You should wear walking boots or possibly wellies.
