What alternative career paths have you considered or are interested in?

I’ve often been pulled between the creative and the performative. I wanted to act, but angled toward the BBC to become a producer — only to be seduced by the false prophet of advertising. I had considered studying either law or fine art at university and could probably have done either, though both would have taken me down very different roads.

I did become a producer and director and had my own production company. How or why I got distracted is another story.

I’ve always wanted to perform, to be at the centre of something expressive — fronting a band was an early ambition — yet I often found myself just behind the camera or managing the show instead. A similar pattern has continued: I’m easily diverted when someone asks me to take something on. It’s how I became a councillor, and even found myself, briefly, aspiring to a political career.

I’d be an artist, a writer – a creative, if that were a career choice of people oaf me. I was paid as a director and did OK for ten years or so.

In truth, my alternative career paths have all revolved around the same impulse — to communicate, organise, and perform — whether through storytelling, leadership, or creative production.
