Name the most expensive personal item you’ve ever purchased (not your home or car).

The most expensive personal item I’ve ever bought — if we set aside house and car — is probably my wooden Streaker racing dinghy.

A wooden Streaker racing dinghy with a sail, parked on a grassy area surrounded by other boats.

Beautifully built and a joy to sail, it certainly outpriced the artworks I’ve collected: a woodblock print (2 of 3) by Barthélémy Toguo and a mural, framed out of necessity, by Lawrence Weiner.

That said, my old Mac setup — the original iMac with its companion screen — might give the dinghy a run for its money once you factor in sentimentality and early-tech nostalgia.

I rather wish I could say it was an engagement ring or wedding ring, but alas, my indulgences tend to float, hang on a wall, or hum quietly on a desk.
