(Winder House, Sedbergh School. age 14)

I didn’t sleep very well and dreamt about Mowden and the terrible letter I wrote. I had had suggestions based on my five-year internship there. I’d written to the Headmaster.

Revised French, but very tired.

I was caught reading after lights out and was given gardening as a punishment by House prefect D L Birchenall. Little do they know how much I enjoy gardening, especially when it means weeding between the shrubs. It’s like an escape. Only the prefect knows where I am, and he never checks. So I could just as easily be down at the river or drawing a picture of our House. I do some gardening, then the drawing.

German: test back – poor. Hardly surprising, I’m only doing German to get out of Latin and will drop it at the end of the term. Both are a waste of time. I needed extra Chemistry.

French: test back 16/21 is OK.

Geography: slides and talk. I’ve been awarded the school Geography Prize for my project on the Eden Valley. I’ll get this at Assembly rather than on School Open Day.

Break

Maths: probability.

English: Read the next two chapters of our set book.

Lunch

Raining.

Cadet Corps.

There’s talk of us going caving in Ingelborough.

Changed.

Eat.

I broke my brace.

Do some painting.
