Someone stole my money – 50YON: Saturday, 22nd May 1976

(Sedbergh. Age 14)

I woke up early so I could make good use of my time and revise Chemistry and French. My two worst subjects.

Chapel. On a Saturday morning? I haven’t figured out why we do this. Don’t we get enough daily religion as it is?

Revise.

Chemistry: test on all this term’s work.

Maths: I’d revised for this test, but didn’t do well.

French: Test OK 23/30.

English: I have to run back to Winder to get my copy of Silas Marner. We read this chapter by chapter, each of us with our own copy. I make separate notes; some write directly into their book. I pick up my case and my anorak as it looks like it will rain.

Chemistry

Lunch.

I take a £5 postal order to the bank, but it is closed.

Swim.

Money nicked. I try to find the culprit. It has to be someone who has used the swimming pool changing rooms.

Supper.

Bath

Everyone but me went to the fair in town. Having had plenty of money, I now had none.

Instead, I doss around House, snack from my tuck box and listen to a David Bowie compilation on cassette recorded by a Sixth Former.
