What historical event fascinates you the most?

As a historian, I’m spoilt for choice, but I always return to the events of 1066—the moment that first captured my imagination as a child reading a Ladybird Pocket Book at six or seven. That single date opened a world of intrigue for me: the clash of cultures, the shifting loyalties, and the extraordinary characters who shaped England’s destiny. Over the years, I’ve read widely about the people, the period, and the ripple effects of that conquest—made all the more fascinating by my own ancestral link to those Viking Norsemen who, three generations earlier, had settled in northern France before crossing the Channel to these sceptred isles.
