Sir John Hegarty once said,
“You express yourself in the way you dress… the things you eat… the place you live, where you go on holiday… the car you buy — all of it is an expression of your creativity.”
It’s a line that’s stayed with me ever since I first met him, when I was a student at the London School of Communication Arts. My mentors then were senior creatives at Bartle Bogle Hegarty — people who lived this truth daily. They didn’t just make adverts; they embodied creativity. Every decision was considered, every detail designed to express a point of view.
I’ve always found this philosophy liberating: that life itself can be an artistic endeavour. You don’t need a gallery, a client, or a commission to live creatively. The way you move through the world — how you spend your morning, what you notice on a walk, how you arrange your desk or greet a friend — all these things can carry the same intention as a painter’s brushstroke or a director’s cut.
It’s a worthy way to live, I think. A reminder that creativity isn’t something you “do” — it’s something you are.
